The challenge
During COVID-19, a surge of racism and violence against Asian Americans deepened division even among communities that needed to move forward together.
The approach
Working with documentary filmmaker Renee Tajima-Peña and author Jeff Chang, launched the May 19th Project on PBS SoCal (formerly KCET.org) — 14 videos made with 100+ creatives, essays adding nuance to the story of cross-community solidarity, and a social campaign including “did-you-know” posts and reading lists.
The results
Reshared and promoted by organizations including For Freedoms, the UCLA Asian American Studies Center, and the WeChat Project. Translated into Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Punjabi, Spanish, Tagalog, and Vietnamese, reaching 11 Southern California counties via PBS SoCal. It continues to live on the PBS SoCal website as a free resource.
